World Class Squash returns to Chichester

The 32nd season of the world’s most prestigious squash league gets underway next Tuesday 6th October. Twelve teams will once again compete in the 2015/2016 Premier Squash League season.

Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club [Team Chichester] will battle for the points, and endeavour to win a place in the play-offs, against perennial rivals Winchester and Exeter with Bristol, St George’s Hill and Surrey making up Group B. Surrey has won the title in five consecutive seasons but last season Duffield convincingly won Group A and then pulled off a tremendous 3.2 victory, at home, against the reigning champions in an epic semi-final. The Derbyshire team then proceeded to win the 2014/2015 title against St. George’s Hill (winners of Group A) who defeated Coolhurst in the other semi-final.

Team Chichester has a new line-up this season. Rex Hendrick, who played for the team for the last 2 seasons, has now returned to Australia. Two new signings have been made; Matt Hopkin from Australia and Paul Coll from New Zealand. Matt Hopkin, from Brisbane, is currently ranked 114 in the world. Paul Coll is world ranked 41 and winner of the Australian Open [Aug 2015]. Paul is based in the Netherlands and hopes to play for Team Chichester in as many ties as possible.

The PSL has recently changed one of its rules in that an Under 21 player (instead of previously Under 24) must play in at least 50% of the matches. Kyle Finch [16 years of age] will be taking a more active part in the team’s line up. He recently reached the semi-finals in his first professional event – The Belfast Open. Since he will remain U21 for several years the Team Chichester hopes to retain his services for many years to come.

Adrian Waller [WR26] and Nathan Lake [WR116] return for a second season whilst Robbie Temple returns for his 10th season with the Chichester club.

Lauren Briggs will be starting her 5th year as Chichester’s leading lady player.

The first fixture is against local rivals Winchester on Tuesday 6 October and the squad aim to ‘better’ last season’s opening match result of 4.1. Tickets and more information: 01243 785664.
