Local favourite Abdullah Al Mezayen beat top seed Ali Anwar Reda in the quarter-finals of the PSA $15k Jena International in Kuwait’s Qadsia Club to dash Egyptian hopes of a clean sweep of semi-finalists.
Abdullah, the talented left-hander who always performs well at home, now meets Omar Abdel Meguid, who produced an upset of his own in beating fourth-seeded Pakistani Aamir Atlas Khan in four games.
No upsets in the all-Egyptian bottom half of the draw, but Karim Abdel Gawad needed a mammoth 87 minutes to overcome Omar Abdel Aziz in five games to set up a meeting with second seed Marwan El Shorbagy who eased past Zahed Mohamed in just under half an hour.
