Coufal claims maiden title in Santiago

Austria’s Birgit Coufal claimed her maiden WISPA title after beating Lisa Aitken in the final of the Trofeo Camino de Santiago in Spain.

Having taken out top seed Alexandra Norman in the semi-finals Coufal, the fifth seeded world #88, scored a second successive upset as she beat Scottish number one Aitken, the third seed ranked #68 in three close games to take the top prize.

The pair’s only previous meeting had also been in Santiago, Coufal winning their first round encounter in 2009, and both were playing their first WISPA Final.
