Middlesex take UK Inter-County O50 and O560 titles

Men’s Over 60 & Over 50 Inter County Finals 21-22 JAN – HUNTS COUNTY CLUB – CAMBS.

SATURDAY – SEMI FINALS

MEN OVER 60

Sussex swept to the final beating Lancashire 3-0 in the first semi-final of the weekend.  The tightest match was between Phil Ayton and Moussa Helal, with Helal unlucky not to have won at least one game.

Middlesex joined Sussex in the final, after they beat Yorkshire 2-1. Howard Cherlin gave them an unassailable lead when he overcame a dogged Bob Robinson 3-1

MEN OVER 50

A very close encounter between Avon and Norfolk, went to the wire.  Avon raced into a 2 -0 lead with wins for Paul Barham and Mark Taylor at 5th and 3rd strings.  Norfolk 1st string John Cordeaux pulled one back, and Mike Livock levelled the match, holding off the stern challenge of Nick Drysdale.  Matters were decided in the last match between Mark Regan and Richard Millman, with Regan taking Avon through to the final with a 3-0 win

Avon were joined in the final by hot favourites favourites Middlesex who proved too strong for Wiltshire dispatching them in a hurry without dropping a single game, James Ockwell was the slow coach of the team taking 23 minutes to overcome Mike Stannard.

MEN OVER 60

First blood went to Yorkshire in the War of The Roses tussle to decide 3rd and 4th place. Howard Stevenson came back from 2-0 down at 3rd string to win 3-2. Yorkshire then wrapped up 3rd place winning the other 2 rubbers.

Holders Sussex took on Middlesex and made a bad start losing the first rubber by 3 games to 2 however in an entertaining match Phil Ayton beat Howard Cherlin 3-1 to level.  The final was decided by a hard fought 2nd string match between Chris Goodbourn with Goodbourn clinching it for Middlesex

Holders Middlesex retained their crown following an early scare against AvonStuart Hardy comfortably won at 5th string, but Mark Taylor levelled for Avon in a bad tempered match with Mark Cowley. The favourites then secured the title with wins from Dulip Adihetty, Alan Thomson and James Ockwell
