2011 at a Glance – February

The first WISPA Gold event of the year, the $55k Cleveland Classic, finishes with a big upset as Laura Massaro, having already upset Jenny Duncalf and Madeline Perry, beats Nicol David in the final. “The best I’ve ever played,” she said, not for the last time. It was even streamed, and you can still watch it.

Meanwhile the men were competing in colder climes, Azlan Iskandar braving the Nova Scotia snowdrifts to claim the Bluenose Classic, Nick Matthew getting his first title of the year in Linkoping’s Swedish Open.

Everyone expected Matthew to claim a fourth British Nationals title, beating James Willstrop (again) in the final, but neither of them would add to that particular tally – an out of sorts Willstrop departed early, and an inspired Daryl Selby came from 2/1 down to beat Matthew in the final. That meant two new champions as local girl Laura Massaro had also come from 2/1 down to beat Jenny Duncalf in the women’s final.

Matthew soon got back on track, beating Ramy in the final of the second World Series event in Richmond’s North American Open, Willstrop would have to wait a while longer.
