Top seeds on target in Auckland

squashnzTop seeds Campbell Grayson and Joelle King are safely through to their respective finals at the New Zealand National Squash Championships in Auckland.

Grayson edged into the last two in the men’s draw with a straight games win over fourth seed Paul Coll.  However, the world number 41 was given a good workout by Coll, before getting home 11-8, 11-7, 11-8.

As expected the other finalist is Martin Knight, although the second seed had to fight back from a game down against Kashif Shuja before winning 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-8.

Meanwhile, Joelle King has made a straight forward progression into the women’s final, downing fourth seed Megan Craig 11-6, 11-7, 11-3 in the semis. However, her opponent  in the title decider is third seed Amanda Landers-Murphy, who was an 11-5, 11-4, 11-6 winner over surprise semifinalist Emma Millar.  Millar had earned her spot in the last four with a shock 11-9, 5-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7 win over second seed Kylie Lindsay in the quarters.

4. Paul Coll beat Lance Beddoes 12-10, 11-5, 11-4
3. Kashif Shuja beat Chris Lloyd 11-8, 11-7, 11-5
2. Martin Knight beat Zac Millar 11-7, 11-1, 7-11, 11-7

Semifinals:

1. Campbell Grayson beat 4. Paul Coll 11-8, 11-7, 11-8
2. Martin Knight beat 3. Kashif Shuja 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-8

 Women’s Quarterfinals:

1. Joelle King beat Danielle Fourie 11-6, 11-2, 11-4
4. Megan Craig beat Ellie Epke 11-8, 11-6, 11-7
3. Amanda Landers-Murphy beat Jo Shanks 11-8, 11-1, 10-12, 11-9
Emma Millar beat 2. Kylie Lindsay 11-9, 5-11, 7-11 11-7, 11-7

Semifinals:

Joelle King beat Megan Craig 11-6, 11-7, 11-3
Amanda Landers-Murphy beat Emma Millar 11-5, 11-4, 11-9
