Top seeds take Cambridge titles

Top seeds Joelle King and Martin Knight confirmed their pre-tournament title favouritism with comfortable victories in their respective finals at the North Island Squash Championships in Cambridge.

King, ranked fifth in the world, was too strong for 37th ranked Amanda Landers Murphy in the women’s open final, winning 11-6, 11-5, 11-5.

Likewise, Knight was untroubled in the final of the men’s open, downing second seed Christopher Lloyd 11-3, 11-1, 11-5.

Neither of the two top seeds dropped a game during the entire tournament.

Top seeds Joelle King and Martin Knight are both safely through to the final of their respective events at the North Island Squash Championships in Cambridge.

King, the world number five, was too good for Aucklander Joanna Shanks in the semis, cruising to an 11-8, 11-0, 11-7 victory.  She had earlier downed New Zealand junior representative Hayley Hughes in four.

King will play second seed Amanda Landers-Murphy in the title decider.  The world number 37 earned her place in the last two with a straight games win over Bay of Plenty’s Alana Sincock, followed by an 11-7, 11-6, 11-4 victory over another of the New Zealand junior women’s team, Auckland’s Ellie Epke.

Meanwhile, Martin Knight has strolled through the men’s draw, winning all three of his matches in straight games, including an 11-2, 11-8, 11-4 victory over fourth seed Chris van der Salm in the semis.

He will play fellow Aucklander Christopher Lloyd in the final, after the second seed bounced back from a game down to beat Bay of Plenty’s Ben Grindrod 6-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-3.
