Upsets top and tail day two in Doha

Day Two of the Qatar PSA World Championship in Doha, and it was the top half of the main draw in action at the Khalifa Tennis and Squash complex.

The day started with an upset as Nafiizwan Adnan beat his compatriot Ong Beng Hee for the first time to claim bragging rights in the Malaysian heirarchy, and ended with another with Egypt’s Omar Abdel Meguid becoming the only one of seven qualifiers to progress with a 75-minute 3-1 victory over American Julian Illingworth.

In between there were comfortable enough wins for the top seeds – James Willstrop dropped the first game to fellow Englishman Chris Ryder but the world number one took the next three with something to spare; fourth and sixth seeds Karim Darwish and Peter Barker wasted no time in reaching round two with quickfire wins; Mohamed El Shorbagy, like Willstrop dropped the first game to a compatriot, but Ali Anwar Reda continued to make it tough for the eighth seed who needed almost an hour to complete his 3-1 win.

The only seed to fall was England’s Tom Richards, #14, beaten 3-2 by Egyptian youngster Karim Abdel Gawad.

There were a number of gruelling matches, notably Mathieu Castagnet’s 105-minute win over qualifier Karim Ali Fathi, and Shawn Delierre’s 102-minute victory four-game victory over Adrian Waller.
