Charlton & Eriksen take Mackay titles

England’s Eddie Charlton upset Mike Corren for the second week in a row to claim the Mackay Open squash title 11-9, 11-9, 11-6 on Sunday as Norway’s Lotte Eriksen won her maiden women’s crown when she beat Victoria Bell 11-3, 1-11, 14-12, 11-7.

A week after Charlton beat Corren in the semi-finals of the Queensland Open, he again stunned the South Australian to win his fourth title on the men’s professional tour.

Charlton edged the first two games before gaining a vital break in the third to wrap up the final in the North Queensland city, denying Corren a hat-trick of Mackay Open titles.

Earlier, Eriksen downed training partner Victoria Bell to earn an overdue first tournament triumph.

After sharing the first two games, Eriksen clinched the third in a tiebreak and was able to hold the Englishwoman off in the fourth.

Both women were playing their first final on the WSA tour and Bell will now head to the Caboolture Open full of confidence.
