Hosts take it all in Slovenia

The hosts take it all!

The 3rd Balkan Team Championships ended with new champions being crowned and both trophies stay in Slovenia.

The Slovenian women secured their first title with a 2/1 win against Croatia. The bronze medal went to Serbia although the second Slovenian team actually finished third but second teams do not count for the official final results.

The Slovenian men also won their first Balkan title with a convincing 3/0 victory against Bulgaria. Bronze went to Croatia.

Next years championships are due to be held next year in Bulgaria with the exact venue yet to be decided.

The third edition of this event will be held this Friday and Saturday at the Konex Club in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana.

Men and women’s teams from 6 nations will be competing for this prestigious regional title. Previous titles were won by the Greek women in Belgrade 2010 and Zagreb 2011. The men’s titles went to Greece in 2010 and last year to Serbia. Unfortunately Greece is not competing this year due to financial restrictions.

Tournament organizer Marko Podgorsek, a well known referee on the European scene, has tried his best to raise the profile of the event and invited European top refs Ralf Harenberg, Peter Zobelein and Thomas Wachter.
